Transitions Optical is proud to support the work of Vision Aid Overseas

Vision Aid Overseas is a charity dedicated to people in the developing world whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight. 300 million people need spectacles to live an ordinary life, but do not have them due to poverty and the lack of optical services. The World Health Organization has acknowledged this as the leading cause of avoidable visual impairment.

..............

Many people who are functionally blind simply need spectacles to see. Without them children fail at school, mothers and fathers have to stop working and elderly people are forced to live without dignity. The consequences for individuals and their communities can be devastating.

Vision Aid Overseas undertakes education and training, organises primary eyecare delivery and establishes workshops that enable patients to access affordable eye care. Our work creates sustainable eye care solutions that have a lasting difference to the communities we reach.

Seeing the difference: Steven Gondwe from Malawi

.....

Steven lives in Malawi. He had struggled at school because of his poor vision. His teachers mistakenly thought he was not very clever. In fact, Steven was very intelligent, but could not see what the teacher was writing on the blackboard. He did not want the other children to laugh at him, so he had never told anyone about his problem. After an eye test established that Steven needed spectacles and a suitable pair was dispensed to him, he could return to school and carry on learning with the other children. He was delighted!
